The Santo Cristo Committee of Saint Elizabeth Church of Bristol, RI was founded and organized in 1917 by a group of parishioners, members of the Holy Christ Micaelense Club. The purpose of the Committee was and is to promote the tradition and culture of the Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, or the Festival of Christ of Miracles. This festival was first celebrated on the island of São Miguel, Açores on April, 13th 1700 in devotion and prayer to Christ for protection from the violent and frequent tremors or quakes that plagued the island. Since then, each year on the 5th Sunday of Easter, multitudes of pilgrims travel to the Island to pray for Christ’s help and mercy, pay homage to him, and give thanks for the many miracles granted.
On May 13, 1918, the first procession in Bristol took place led by the Holy Christ Micaelense Club and Rev. Francisco Vieira, a native of the Azores.
Upon dissolution of the Club in 1926, the Colonial Club Holy Christ, took responsibility for the continuation of the festival. At the outbreak of World War II, the festivities were halted and were not celebrated again until Reverend Pastor, Monsignor Henrique Rocha of St. Elizabeth Church resumed the procession after the end of the war. Thanks to the goodwill of the Parishioners and their spiritual guides, such as Rev. Rocha, it is said to have been continuously celebrated each consecutive year since without interruption.
And the faith continues … the brilliance and wonder of this celebration is exceptional, tangible proof of a faithful people, now led by the 2020 Santo Cristo Committee and it’s various subcommittees. The invaluable support of all Saint Elizabeth Parishioners and supporters are what keeps this tradition alive.
